Thursday and Friday articles

Mr. Olive will be running the class Thursday and Friday.
He may be using the following:

Jackson's past allowed in court

Jackson's past allowed in court. It's about Michael Jackson. If the government is allowed to tell about all the people who have charged him with abuse in the past, they can make him look very guilty.

I think he's guilty. Too bad. I always kind of liked him. But if he's guilty, he's not really the kind of person we should support, etc.

Gadgets rule on college campuses

This article is from USA Today. It's about gadgets: cell phones, internet, dial-up, IPod, etc. It's all over the place. Campus is different now than it was a couple of years ago.

I'm amazed...that's all I can say. It's so different. I don't really like it, but I don't know why. Maybe it's just that everyone's so cool, and I'm not!

See you on Monday!

Oil and the Arctic

Are we a nation of fossil fuels? I really like this article because I agree with it a lot. Basically it says that the oil companies are very powerful. They are drilling in the Arctic and then will drill in other places too, but the price of gas will still go up.

I agree...this nation needs to stop being so dependent on oil.

By the way I'm afraid the Tribune might be a subscription paper (but free). I forget as it lets my computer in there all the time. If it is, I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Juvenile arrested

This story is about another young man who was arrested in the case of the Red Lake school shooting. The reason it's important is that if more than one person was involved, it's much more serious than if one kid went crazy by himself. Also, the juvenile who was arrested was the son of a powerful person.

I think that school shootings are terrible tragedies that affect us all, but I'm not sure what we should do about them. Make the schools into armed camps?

Terri Schiavo

My article is called Dignity or Political Expediency and it's in the Daily Egyptian, the SIU student newspaper. It gives the story of Terri Schiavo, who is in a coma. Her parents want her to live but her husband says that she would have wanted to die. The article's main point is that we should all make our feelings known about what they should do with us if we are in her condition. We should make our feelings known with a living will, which is a legal document.

I agree completely, but I haven't been able to make a living will. I just wouldn't know what to put in the document. How can you decide this kind of thing?

Your posts

When you post an article, you need to do three things.

1. Link us to the article. Give us the title of the article.
Notice that if you put the title of the article in the title of the post, you cannot link to it there. You can only put your link in the body of the post. On blogger and mac, you need some basic html to make that link. Read your handout!

2. Tell us briefly what the article is about. This can be as little as one sentence.

3. Give us an opinion briefly. Sometimes you agree with the author, sometimes not, sometimes you just think it's interesting. Any opinion will do. Give us something to think about.

An example is above! More will follow!
